21 Years Of Lagaan: Know the story of Aamir Khan becoming ‘Bhuvan’, the actor had created history by doing many experiments

21 Years Of Lagaan: The story of the making of Aamir Khan starrer film ‘Lagaan’ is also historical in itself. All the tales related to the film released on 15 June 2001 are heard and narrated. ‘Lagaan’ would not have proved to be the best film of Aamir’s film career if Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan or Abhishek Bachchan had said yes to this film. On the completion of 21 years of the film, let us tell the story of the making of that film which proved to be a milestone in Aamir’s career. Aamir did every experiment in this film which he wanted to do for years.

The film ‘Lagaan’, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, had a great run at the box office 21 years ago. The film did business three times its budget. Aamir Khan was also the producer of the film and was also in the lead role with Gracy Singh. The story of Aamir being in the film is no less interesting. According to media reports, when Ashutosh was writing the film, Shahrukh Khan was the first in his mind as an actor, but for some reason Shahrukh refused. Then approached Bobby Deol, Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, but all refused to do the film.

Aamir Khan didn’t want to do a cricket film

When Ashutosh Gowariker talked to Aamir Khan, he did not show interest in doing a film based on cricket. Ashutosh said that first listen to the story of the film, if it feels right, then do yes. Aamir listened to Ashutosh and listening to the story, his eyes became moist and thus Ashutosh got Bhuvan. Aamir Khan had told that ‘When I decided to make ‘Lagaan’, I knew that I was taking a big risk because it was an out of the ordinary film. A few weeks before I left for the shoot, I met Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar. Both are very good friends of mine and were worried for me.

Aditya said that ‘You are making a big film for the first time in your production, shooting in a single schedule and also using sync sound. Shoot the first 30 days and see how it goes. Don’t schedule singles, you won’t have a chance to correct your mistakes. Don’t even use sync sound, it will delay your shooting. You will dub the dialogues later, that would be wise.

Aamir Khan did what he wanted to do for years

But Aamir did not heed his advice, as he wanted to use single schedule shooting and sync sound for many years. Aamir told that ‘I used to ask the director for sync sound since 1995 because the emotion I was creating during the shooting gets wasted, then the same emotion had to be brought back during dubbing. These were things that I wanted to do as an actor but my producers did not listen to me. I used to think that when I become a producer, I will definitely do it. Aamir did the same.

‘Lagaan’ created a buzz 21 years ago

In the film ‘Lagaan’, the story of a village under the burden of rent in the British Raj, where people take the risk of playing a game like cricket to get the rent waived from the British rule.
