Detail Review: This Flight From ‘The Flight Attendant’ Lands Straight On Your Mind

Detail Review ‘The Flight Attendant’: The novel The Flight Attendant is a unique book written by Chris Bohjalian and published in 2018. Firstly, it takes such an inside look at the personal and professional life of a flight attendant or airhostess that at some point you start hating the life of a flight attendant. There is no meaning in their life, there is a very shallow life and in this profession surrounded by loneliness, how the flight attendant keeps on mentally destroying his personal life, it keeps haunting you. The novel was widely read.

In 2020, it was decided to make a television series on it and keeping in mind the choice of the audience, it was given the color of a dark comedy. One of the few well-known shows in television history, “The Big Bang Theory” featured lead actress Kelly Cuoco in the lead role. The series was first released on HBO Max and after a long time it was released on Amazon Prime Video. This web series could have been a simple web series but its plot twist and its presentation is very unique, different due to which it becomes a must watch.

Casey Bowden (Kelly Cuoco) of America is a flight attendant whose duty is on international flights. Like most American girls, in an attempt to fill the void in her life, Casey often sneaks up on a passenger and then executes her plans to party and spend the night in that city. On one such occasion, after partying with a Russian businessman Alex Sokolov (Michiel Huisman) in Bangkok, when she wakes up from his bed in the morning, she finds that Alex has been murdered by slitting his throat. Casey runs away from there but this murder does not leave her behind.

Due to being an international crime by a US citizen, the FBI also gets involved in its investigation and Casey himself tries to investigate it at his level to get rid of this issue. Casey’s troubles keep on increasing every moment. He doesn’t understand what to do. On this he also has a bad habit of drinking alcohol, due to which he keeps having hallucinations and keeps remembering old things. In this 8-episode long series, Casey tries to prove her innocence. Whether he gets success or not is the secret of this series.

Kelly Cuoco’s work in Flight of Acting is worth watching. Most of the viewers are looking for Penny from The Big Bang Theory in him but he has done a slightly different kind of acting in this role. Influenced by her father, a plane crashes near Casey’s house, a little tomboy-type childhood, and the flight attendant rescues all the passengers, just after she wants to become a flight attendant. The specialty of Kelly’s character is that she does not even try to control her addiction to alcohol and tells the truth every time to the FBI, despite her friend’s best wishes.

The characters are many more, and all seem to advance the story in one way or another, except for the FBI agents who want to repeatedly lead the story to Kelly being the murderer and don’t even trust him. Michiel Huiman dies in the first episode itself, but he keeps coming back to Kelly’s memory and asking her to make the right decision. His character is also good, acting is fine. Josiah has also played a good role as Kelly’s friend and lawyer. What more does one need in life than friends who are always there in crisis.

A different director has been hired for almost every episode, the reason is not understood but directing all of them does not create unnecessary variety in every episode. It also took about a dozen writers to turn the novel into a screenplay. The web series should be good, only for this purpose the team works in America, there is more than one writer or director. Its second season has been released on HBO Max in April this year but it is not yet available on Amazon for the audience of India.

Looking at the manner in which this series is, it seems that soon its second season will have to be seen because in the second season, Kelly’s character has been crafted more closely. Flashbacks are used in a new way in Season 1 as well, with Kelly and Michelle as a spectator watching past events that happened to Kelly in front of them and analyzing the incident. This technique of storytelling is less used and is mostly seen in detective films, but this time a comedy has also been put through it.

The Flight Attendant is long, seems to focus too much on a single incident in between, so it gets boring. Viewers who love Kelly Cuoco will still enjoy watching this series. Those watching the series without any bias will not like it much.
