Exclusive Interview: The director of ‘Innocent Question’ told why it was necessary to show ‘Krishna’ with a pad in the poster?

Masoom Sawal Controversy: There has been a lot of uproar on social media regarding the film ‘Masoom Sawal’ based on ‘menstruation’ and ‘Aastha’. The film has come into controversy due to the picture of Lord Krishna on the sanitary pad. The director of the film Santosh Upadhyay has been accused of hurting religious sentiments. Along with this, an FIR has also been registered against the makers and production team of the film. Now breaking the silence on this matter, director Santosh Upadhyay has reacted. Santosh Upadhyay, in a special conversation with ‘News18.com’, spoke on the real story of the film and the poster controversy. He told why it is very important to show sanitary pads on the poster of the film.

Director Santosh Upadhyay told that the film ‘Masoom Sawal’ is inspired by a true incident. The entire story of the film revolves around a 12-year-old girl whose problems start after her first period.

‘Innocent question’ inspired by true incident
Santosh Upadhyay is not only a director but also an astrologer. In such a situation, people go to him to solve their problems. On making a film on a bold subject like ‘menstruation’, Santosh Upadhyay said that he made this film so that people can become aware about ‘some misconceptions related to menstruation and faith’. Santosh says that he got the story idea from the story of a 12-year-old girl. He elaborated and said, “Once in the year 2014, during the Raksha Bandhan festival, a 12-year-old girl came to me, who considers Lord Krishna as her brother and wants to tie Rakhi to her brother. But she is unable to touch the idol of Kanha nor tie rakhi to her because of her menstruation.

Santosh Upadhyay further said, “The girl came to him with her problem and asked the question whether menstruation would have been impure? Is it a sin to touch the idol during the period? I became very emotional with this question of the girl. After that I started thinking of making a film on it from 2014 onwards.” According to the director, ‘Innocent question’ is the story of the same girl which is completely based on true incident. This is a drama film but based on true incident.

Said on poster controversy – some people are taking illegitimate advantage of freedom
Santosh Upadhyay targeted the trollers on the ‘innocent question’ boycott and its poster controversy. He said, “There is a lot of uproar in our country regarding freedom of expression. We Bollywood people or film makers are often targeted. Whereas in this matter I would say here that people are taking illegitimate advantage of freedom of expression. If any poster, on which so much controversy is being created, is seen by zooming, then the original character of the film ‘Niyati’ (Nitanshi Goyal) is holding Kanha in her hands. The sanitary pad is in the background. Not Kanha is shown on the pad.

It was very important to show sanitary pads on the poster
Santosh Upadhyay says on ‘Poster Controversy’ that the allegations have been made against him. It is baseless and baseless. It has nothing to do with reality. I have listened to the objections raised by people, but I have nothing to do with them. It is necessary to show sanitary pads in the poster because this is the issue of the film. We can’t go beyond it because if we do, the film would have deviated from its point.”

He further clarified his point and said, “Look, the poster is a silent teaser. Everyone has to understand this thing. If we remove the pad from the poster, what will people understand on what subject this film is made. Those who have not seen the trailer, what will they guess after seeing the poster. The purpose of showing the pad in the poster is just so that people can understand on what issue the film is made.
