What is Growth Hormone Deficiency
Dr Richa Chaturvedi, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, told that the secretion of growth hormone is very important for the development of bones and tissues in the body of children. But when there is not enough secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland or it stops being there, then there is a growth hormone deficiency. Dwarfism and stuntedness occur due to lack of growth hormone.

Why does this disease happen?
Dr Richa Chaturvedi told that if the pituitary gland or hypothalamus gland is damaged due to any reason, then growth hormone is not produced in the child. Injury can also be the reason, which can damage the pituitary gland or hypothalamus gland in children before or after birth. Why these two glands are damaged, sometimes the reasons for this may not be known. Since the pituitary gland is a pea-sized master gland located at the base of the brain and also secretes 16 other hormones, other effects are also seen due to the influence of other hormones.
Symptoms of Growth Hormone Deficiency
Dr Richa Chaturvedi told that if the development of the child is not like the other child of the same age, then it should be understood that the child has Growth Hormone Deficiency. However, it has many other symptoms. In this the height of the child is much less than other children. Dr Chaturvedi said that in most cases, along with growth hormone deficiency, there is also estrogen deficiency in females and testosterone deficiency in males. If both these conditions are together then puberty in children is also affected. Dr Chaturvedi told that it can be understood in a normal way in such a way that breast development is not possible in female child and period does not come, while male child’s voice does not get heaviness in comparison to other children. Due to all these problems, there can be depression and anxiety in the child and there may be difficulty in concentrating on anything. In Growth Hormone Deficiency, the memory of the child remains very poor. There can also be a complaint of constipation. In this disease, the face of the child looks very chubby and very small. Hair does not grow. Even if it is, it looks very useless. However, all these do not affect the intellectual ability of the child.
when should go to the doctor
Dr Richa Chaturvedi says that the symptoms of growth hormone deficiency in children start showing from the beginning. These symptoms usually start appearing between 3 years to 8 years but unfortunately parents ignore it. He said that if the symptoms are seen in children, then they should go to the doctor immediately. The doctor examines and finds out what is the reason for the stunted growth of the child. If the child has a growth hormone deficiency, then this disease can be cured by giving injections of hormones daily. The effect of the treatment is visible within 3 to 4 months. However, it is treated till puberty.
how much does treatment cost
Dr. Richa Chaturvedi told that the treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency is a bit expensive. That’s why some people are unable to get the child’s treatment due to financial constraints. He told that 10 to 20 thousand can be spent on the treatment of growth deficiency in a month. This must have been the reason that Abdu Rojic’s father could not get him treated due to financial constraints. Abdu Rojic also had rickets. In this situation, both are treated in different ways. That means it has to cost more. Dr Richa Chaturvedi says that children suffering from growth hormone deficiency should be brought to the doctor before the age of 13.
